Data store and backup

What the data store holds, where it lives, how to move it, and how to back it up.

The data store holds these three things.

  • Database (SQLite) — organizing information such as tags, authors, and collections
  • Library folder — the actual image and video files
  • AutoTag model — only if you installed it

The location is what you chose during initial setup. You can check it in the Desktop app under “Data store location”.

Move it

Use “Move data store” in settings to move the database and library together to another location. Don’t use the app while the move is in progress; wait for it to finish.

Split across drives

The database and library folder can point to separate locations. You can keep just the actual files on an external SSD or a large drive. If you put them on an external drive, connect the drive before launching the app.

Backup

Copy the database and library folder, and you can restore from that copy. Settings also includes Import / Export for the database.

Automatic backup on update

When an app update includes a database update, a backup is created automatically before it is applied, and the path to it is shown. If something goes wrong after the update, you can recover from this backup. → Troubleshooting
